Apply For a Biometric Passport Online
How do I Apply For a Biometric Passport Online? Two years ago, HM Passport Office (HMPO) introduced a new digital service to allow British passport holders to renew their passport online. Since then, around 2 million online renewals have been completed. Buy Biometric Passport Online
Now, users can also apply for their first British passport online. This new service builds on the current digital renewal features which include the innovative photo upload tool, online declaration and clear guidance.
Before this new service, users were often confused about what documents they needed, attending interviews and the process of getting their identity confirmed, known as a countersignature.
The Digital Customer Services (DCS) team at HMPO worked to improve all these pain points.

They were introduced during the last decade because of the increasing threat of identity theft and terrorism, encouraging many countries to improve the security of their borders.
What does a biometric passport look like?
The simplest way to tell if your passport is biometric is by looking at the cover. If there’s a small, gold camera logo at the bottom, then it’s biometric.
Otherwise, the technology held within a biometric passport has become so advanced and the components so small that you can’t feel any lumps or ridges at all.
The main advantages of a biometric passport are greater security and faster entry into the UK through border control.
The chip and the data held on it inside the passport is much more difficult to replicate than information on a printed page, making it tough for fraudsters and criminals to use your passport or identity. Buy Biometric Passport Online,
In addition, having this type of passport means you can use the ePassport gate at border control in the UK. A machine at the gate will scan your passport and match the data on it with your face using facial recognition technology, making the process quick and easy.
What if my passport isn’t biometric?
The British Government have been issuing updated biometric passports to UK nationals since 2010, so if you have applied for a new passport since then, your current passport should be biometric. However, if it’s not, your current passport will remain valid until its expiry date and you don’t need to change it.
Remember that applying for a new passport can take up to four weeks, especially in the busy summer months, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get a new passport before you travel.
Travelling to the US Apply for Citizenship and Passport Registration
Since April 2016, Britons travelling to the US using its ESTA visa waiver scheme have been required to hold a US biometric passport to gain entry into the country or face being turned away at border control.
There have been many cases of Britons with holidays booked in America being unaware of the new rules and being refused boarding at a UK airport. Buy United State Passport
What to do at the ePassport gate
As long as you are over 18, a UK or EU citizen, and have the biometric symbol on the cover of your passport, you can use the ePassport gate at border control.
Citizenship and passport services at York Register Office
We are changing the number of services we provide in relation to citizenship and passport applications, as more processes are made available online through GOV.UK or the Home Office, so please check before attending York Register Office as we may not be able to provide support for your application.
Joint citizenship and passport applications
York Register Office no longer offers the joint citizenship and passport application service. Applications now need to be completed online, before attending 1 of 57 new service centres known as UK Visa and Citizenship Application Centres.

UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services
When you apply for a visa, settlement (‘indefinite leave to remain’) or citizenship in the UK, you’ll usually need to use UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS).
Use UKVCAS to provide:
- your biometric information (fingerprints and photo)
- supporting documents for your application
You’ll be told if you need to use UKVCAS when you apply.
What you need to do
You’ll usually need to attend an appointment at a UKVCAS service point to provide your biometric information.
You can provide your supporting documents either by:
- uploading them into the UKVCAS online service
- having them scanned at your UKVCAS appointment
If you’re applying to the EU Settlement Scheme, you must upload your supporting documents when you apply. You will not be able to scan them at your UKVCAS appointment.
When you do not need an appointment
You may not need to attend a UKVCAS service centre if you’re applying for a:
- Student or Child Student visa
- replacement Biometric Residence Card (BRC)
- replacement Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
You must also:
- currently be in the UK
- have previously given UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) your fingerprints – this must have been since 2015 if you’re applying for a Student or Child Student visa
If you do not need an appointment, you’ll get an email explaining how to submit a photo and your documents. If you cannot send the information, you’ll be able to book an appointment.
Making your appointment
You’ll need to create a UKVCAS account when you apply and make your appointment online.
If you cannot go to an appointment because you have coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms or because you are self-isolating, it will not affect your immigration status.
